Retired Headmaster and Environmentalist Ranjit Kumar Sharma Passes Away at 62

Udalguri–Sonitpur, June 28: Renowned environmentalist, social worker and retired headmaster Ranjit Kumar Sharma (62) passed away at a private hospital in Guwahati on Saturday after a prolonged illness, leaving the people of Dhanashrighat in mourning.

Sharma served as the Financial Secretary of the Aranya Suraksha Samiti, Assam (Forest Protection Committee, Assam), and was the retired Headmaster of Jamuguri Primary School. A dedicated nature lover, he had been actively associated with the organisation for many years and made significant contributions to environmental conservation and public awareness.

Beyond his environmental work, Sharma was widely respected for his active involvement in social, cultural, educational and religious activities across the greater Dhanashrighat region. He worked tirelessly for the welfare and development of the local community.

He was among the founding office-bearers of the Dhanashrighat Regional Rongali Bihu Celebration Committee, the founding President of the Managing Committee of Shankardev Shishu Niketan, Dhanashrighat, a founding organiser of the Sri Sri Lakshmi Puja and Fair, and an active member of the Dhanashrighat Community Namghar.

Following news of his demise, hundreds of people gathered at his residence to pay their last respects. His mortal remains were first taken to Jamuguri Primary School, where students and teachers paid tribute. The body was later taken to Shankardev Shishu Niketan, Dhanashrighat, where students, teachers and staff offered their final respects.

His last rites were performed later in the day at the cremation ground on the banks of the Dhanashri River.

Ranjit Kumar Sharma is survived by his wife and other family members. His death has left a deep void in the social and cultural life of Dhanashrighat, and he will be remembered for his lasting contributions to education, environmental conservation and community service.
