Rhino Poaching Bid Foiled in Kaziranga, Suspect Escapes After Night Pursuit

Guwahati, March 21: Forest officials averted a suspected rhino poaching attempt in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park under the Biswanath Wildlife Division following specific intelligence inputs.

Acting swiftly, authorities intensified surveillance in the Eastern Range at Gamari. At around 10:30 pm on March 20, patrol teams noticed a suspicious individual near Gonati carrying what appeared to be a bundled firearm, prompting immediate action.

A joint operation involving personnel from the Eastern Range and the Crime Investigation Range, along with senior officials, was launched to apprehend the suspect. Despite a coordinated pursuit, the individual managed to flee under the cover of darkness and is believed to be hiding in the surrounding area.

During a follow-up search, officials recovered a country-made rifle without a bolt and a pair of shoes from the spot, indicating a possible attempt to target wildlife.

Search operations remain underway to trace the suspect and prevent any further threat to the park’s wildlife.
