Rijiju Urges Calm and Cooperation Ahead of Winter Session, Says Government Will Prioritise Listening

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Sunday, 30 November, called for a calm, cooperative and productive Winter Session of Parliament, stressing that the government intends to foster a constructive environment with the participation of all political parties.

Speaking ahead of an all-party meeting, Rijiju said the Centre would focus on listening to the concerns raised by the opposition rather than dominating discussions. He noted that the government’s approach this session would be centred on dialogue and mutual respect. “We won’t be saying much on behalf of the government today. We will sit with all leaders from all parties and listen to them,” he stated.

Rijiju also informed that the Business Advisory Committee meetings have been scheduled for later in the day, with the Lok Sabha panel convening at 4 pm and the Rajya Sabha panel at 5 pm. The government is expected to outline its formal legislative agenda for the Winter Session during these meetings.

Urging lawmakers to maintain composure during deliberations, he said, “Since it’s the winter session, we hope everyone works with a cool head and avoids heated debates. A smooth Parliament session will benefit the entire nation.” His remarks come amid concerns over possible disruptions as key political issues dominate national discourse.

Responding to questions about discussions related to the Spectacles Identity Rule (SIR), Rijiju declined to confirm whether the government plans to raise the matter in Parliament. He maintained that the Election Commission is an autonomous constitutional authority and criticised opposition parties, particularly the Congress, for what he described as targeted attacks on the poll body.

On the political situation in Bihar, the Minister said stability had returned with a government led once again by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. He added that the recent developments reaffirmed the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the state. “People vote for those who perform and deliver. Good work has been done there,” he remarked.

The upcoming Winter Session is expected to feature intense debates on major bills, governance issues and national politics, even as the government appeals for peaceful, interruption-free proceedings in both Houses of Parliament.
