Guwahati, Feb 23: Acclaimed Assamese filmmaker Rima Das has secured a Special Mention Award at the Berlin International Film Festival for her coming-of-age film Not a Hero.
The honour came in the Generation Kplus Children’s Jury category for Best Film, following the movie’s world premiere on February 14. The festival concluded on February 22.
Das, who earlier brought global attention to Assam with Village Rockstars, India’s official entry to the Academy Awards in 2019, returned to Berlin’s Generation section with this heartfelt story centred on 11-year-old Mivan. The film explores the child’s emotional journey as he navigates life between the fast pace of the city and his rural roots.
Producers at Flying River Films shared the news on social media, expressing gratitude for the recognition. “It’s truly special to win the Special Mention at Berlinale Generation Kplus,” they stated, thanking the Generation jury, team, and audiences for embracing the film.
Speaking about her inspiration, Das said children experience the world without filters. “Through Mivan, I was drawn to a way of seeing where confusion, resistance, and tenderness coexist naturally. He does not analyse his emotions, he lives them,” she said.
The recognition once again places Northeast India on the global cinematic map, highlighting powerful stories of youth, identity, and resilience emerging from the region.
