Royal Bengal Tiger spotted in Dibru-Saikhowa National Park

Dibrugarh: In a historic development for wildlife conservation in Assam, Dibru-Saikhowa National Park has, for the first time since its notification as a national park, confirmed the presence of a Royal Bengal Tiger through photographic evidence. The tiger was captured on camera at Salibari in the Kundaghat area of the park. Sharing the milestone on social media platform X, Assam Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said that Dibru-Saikhowa National Park and Biosphere Reserve, under the Tinsukia Wildlife Division, has created history with its first-ever recorded sighting of a Royal Bengal Tiger.

The confirmation has generated widespread excitement among conservationists and wildlife enthusiasts, as this marks the first photographic proof of a tiger in the park. Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the Tinsukia Wildlife Division, Bibison Tokbi, said the first photographic evidence was obtained on December 14, 2025, followed by another confirmation on January 1, 2026. “For the past one month, a joint team of the Forest Department and the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) has been conducting intensive camera trapping inside the park. Around 60 camera traps were installed, and the tiger was recorded twice,” Tokbi said. He added that while earlier claims of tiger presence existed, this is the first confirmed photographic record since the park’s declaration.

Nature enthusiasts welcomed the development, calling it a hopeful sign for wildlife revival. Forest officials also reported other rare sightings, including a porcupine and a wild dog-like animal, with monitoring efforts continuing in collaboration with WTI.
