The cremation ground at historic Rudrapad in Tezpur, Sonitpur district, remains in a dilapidated condition due to a lack of modern facilities, forcing residents to perform last rites along the banks of the Brahmaputra.
The issue was raised by local nature enthusiast Saurav Borkataky, who reportedly witnessed the condition of the cremation ground while attending the last rites of a local resident. He said government funds had previously been allocated for the facility, but alleged that proper modernisation work had not been carried out.
Borkataky said the lack of basic facilities often forced residents to conduct cremations along the Brahmaputra. The situation becomes particularly difficult during the monsoon, when heavy rain and strong currents raise concerns over the safety of funeral pyres near the riverbank.
He also alleged that the cremation ground was poorly maintained, with dense vegetation, bushes and accumulated waste covering parts of the premises. The lack of essential infrastructure and basic amenities has further added to the difficulties faced by families performing last rites.
Rudrapad, which houses the Shiva temple and attracts devotees and tourists throughout the year, is also being developed as a religious and tourist destination. Borkataky described the condition of the cremation ground as unfortunate and urged the authorities to prioritise its modernisation.
He appealed to the Sonitpur District Commissioner, state government and concerned departments to establish a permanent and safe cremation facility and ensure regular cleanliness and maintenance of the premises.
