Guwahati, April 5: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on April 5 said the Bharatiya Janata Party remains committed to protecting the land, language and identity of the people of Assam ahead of the Assembly elections.
Speaking to the media, Sonowal asserted that the party has earned public trust through its focus on development, peace and safeguarding the interests of indigenous communities. He also highlighted what he described as firm action taken over the past decade against illegal immigration.
He said the election holds significance in preserving Assam’s identity, adding that measures implemented by the BJP government to address illegal immigration have been “exemplary”.
Highlighting national leadership, Sonowal pointed to Narendra Modi, stating that people have strong faith in his governance and vision.
Targeting the Indian National Congress, he alleged that the party had hindered Assam’s development during its tenure and facilitated the settlement of illegal immigrants, which, according to him, impacted the state’s progress.
The remarks come as the state prepares for polling on April 9 across 126 constituencies, with counting scheduled for May 4, amid a closely contested battle between the BJP-led NDA and the Congress-led alliance.
