Guwahati, Jan 4: Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on January 3 underscored the indispensable role of the media in a democratic society, calling on journalists to safeguard press freedom, uphold ethical standards and ensure public accountability amid an increasingly challenging information landscape. He was addressing the 17th Central Mid-Term Conference of the Assam Press Correspondents’ Union (APCU).
Describing journalists as the conscience keepers of society, Sonowal said the media functions as the fourth pillar of democracy and serves as the authentic voice of the people. He remarked that the responsibility carried by the press in protecting freedom of expression and reinforcing democratic values is immense. Stressing the importance of credibility, he urged media professionals to remain committed to truth and ethical reporting while resisting the pressures of misinformation and sensationalism.
The Union minister said responsible journalism should act as a vital link between the government and citizens by reflecting public concerns, encouraging dialogue and fostering social cohesion. He added that in a rapidly evolving media environment, journalists must continuously upgrade their skills, adapt to new technologies and remain rooted in public interest and professional integrity. Constructive engagement and consensus-building by the media, he noted, can play a meaningful role in strengthening society.
The conference was attended by MLAs Sanjay Kishan and Bolin Chetia, along with senior journalists and other prominent personalities from the media fraternity.
Later in the day, Sonowal visited the Makum Legislative Assembly constituency, where he inaugurated and laid foundation stones for various welfare and development projects. He also interacted with beneficiaries of flagship schemes of the Prime Minister and met local entrepreneurs, acknowledging their contribution to economic growth at the grassroots level.
Praising the governance model under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sonowal said development initiatives have reached the last mile, directly empowering citizens and encouraging entrepreneurship. He said the effective implementation of welfare schemes has transformed governance into a more people-centric system.
At Panitola, the Union minister inaugurated a newly built Senior Citizens’ Office Bhawan constructed under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme. Built at a cost of Rs 15 lakh during the 2024–25 financial year, the facility is intended to strengthen institutional support and promote community engagement among senior citizens. Sonowal said such infrastructure reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive development and ensuring dignity and support for the elderly.
Several public representatives and officials, including Makum Municipal Board chairperson Archana Saikia, Makum College vice principal Papori Baruah, Dibrugarh Development Authority chairman Pulak Gohain, Assam State Housing Board chairman Kushakanta Bora, BJP Tinsukia district president Ashim Hazarika and other local leaders, were present during the programmes.
