Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on December 7 clarified that the state government will incur only a minimal share of the expenses for the upcoming Post Malone concert in Guwahati, as the bulk of the funding has already been secured through private sponsorships. Speaking to reporters, Sarma said the event has received substantial backing from an external government-associated agency, reducing the financial burden on the state.
He explained that although the government had initially anticipated contributing a significant amount, the overwhelming response from sponsors ensured that public expenditure would be negligible. He noted that the state might provide a token contribution, but the primary financial support has already been arranged through sponsorships.
Describing the concert as a rare opportunity for the Northeast, Sarma mentioned that music enthusiasts from Meghalaya, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh are expected to attend. He quipped that he himself would not be present, adding humorously that the event is “for the young,” but acknowledged that it marks the first time such a high-profile international artist from the US and UK is performing in Guwahati.
Sarma expressed optimism that Guwahati could emerge as a major centre for concert tourism if it consistently hosts such large-scale international events. He said that Shillong currently leads the region’s concert economy, but with a few more successful shows, Guwahati could soon develop into a strong contender.
The Post Malone concert, featuring the Grammy-nominated American rapper and global music sensation, has already generated significant enthusiasm among young audiences and artists across Assam and the wider Northeast, positioning it as one of the region’s most anticipated international music events.
