Sarma Warns of ‘Stringent Action’ Against Pawan Khera Amid Escalating Passport Row

Guwahati, April 7: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 7 intensified his attack on Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera, warning of “stringent action” as the political confrontation over allegations concerning his family deepened.

Speaking to reporters, Sarma questioned the basis of the claims made by the Congress and said the party should have verified facts with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar before making allegations. He also suggested that Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi may be linked to the documents cited.

The Chief Minister further targeted Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, while reiterating that legal action would follow. “Assam Police can find people and bring them from ‘pataal’ as well,” he said.

The remarks came after the Assam Police conducted searches at Khera’s residence in New Delhi. Deputy Commissioner of Police Debajit Nath confirmed the operation, stating that searches had been carried out but declined to share further details.

The controversy originates from allegations by Khera that Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, holds multiple passports from different countries and has undisclosed foreign assets, including properties in Dubai and a company in Wyoming, United States. The Chief Minister’s family has denied the claims, describing the documents as fabricated and manipulated.

Sarma also alleged that Khera left New Delhi following the police action, claiming he had “run away” to Hyderabad. He maintained that the law would take its course and reiterated his intent to pursue legal remedies.

Dismissing the allegations, Sarma said documents linking his family to overseas assets were sourced from online platforms and misrepresented. He further accused Congress leaders, including Gaurav Gogoi, of relying on questionable foreign sources, raising concerns about alleged external links.

The political row has intensified ahead of polling in Assam on April 9, with campaigning entering its final phase. Counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.
