Security Forces Destroy 30 Acres of Poppy Plantations in Manipur

Imphal: In a significant breakthrough in the fight against narcotics, security forces have destroyed 30 acres of poppy plantations in Songlung village and surrounding areas of Lhangjol and Waphong villages under Kangchup Police Station in Kangpokpi district. The operation, conducted on November 2, was part of the ongoing Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, a nationwide campaign aimed at eradicating substance abuse.

During the operation, security forces also destroyed three farm huts, three fertilizer bags, and two sacks of salt. Two burnt-out Gypsy vehicles were recovered from the site. The authorities have commended the security personnel for their relentless efforts and dedication to curbing illegal poppy cultivation and safeguarding the youth from the menace of drugs.

In a separate incident, security forces have arrested eight militants belonging to various proscribed outfits in Manipur. The arrests were made on November 2, with three active cadres of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (Taibanganba) arrested from Khongjom Bazar in Thoubal district, and another member apprehended from Pureiromba in Imphal East.

The operations demonstrate the government’s commitment to tackling the issue of narcotics and substance abuse in the region. The Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan aims to create awareness about the ill effects of substance abuse, provide support to those affected, and rehabilitate them. The campaign has been launched in 372 vulnerable districts across the country, with a focus on community participation and collaboration with various stakeholders.
