Imphal: Security forces in Manipur, working alongside multiple government agencies including the Forest Department, carried out extensive poppy destruction operations across Ukhrul and Kangpokpi districts as part of an intensified crackdown on illegal drug cultivation.
On 13 November, a joint team uprooted and burned poppy crops spread across nearly 35 acres in the Mullam hill range under Litan Police Station in Ukhrul district. During the operation, three huts believed to have been used by cultivators for temporary shelter were also demolished.
This action followed a major drive on 12 November in Kangpokpi district, where security personnel destroyed approximately 56 acres of poppy plantations. The operation was conducted in two targeted areas — the adjoining zones between the Thonglang Akutpa and Songjang hill ranges, and Awlmun village under Kangchup Police Station.
According to official sources, the operations aimed to dismantle entrenched networks of illegal poppy cultivation fuelling the region’s drug trade. Along with clearing the plantations, the forces razed 19 farm huts allegedly used for shelter and processing activities, and seized 10 bags of fertiliser and 9 sacks of salt, all of which were destroyed.
Officials described the consecutive operations as a significant step in curbing narcotics production in Manipur’s hill districts, adding that similar coordinated efforts will continue in the coming weeks.
