A senior Buddhist monk was found dead inside his monastery in Margherita Co-District, Assam, on November 23, with police treating the case as suspected murder.
The deceased, identified as Indrasingh Mahathera of Inthem Mungong Buddha Vihar, was discovered inside a room at the monastery. Officers recovered a blood-stained axe near the body, immediately prompting suspicions of foul play. The monastery is located approximately 20 kilometres from Margherita town in Tinsukia district.
Police have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the monk’s death. However, no arrests have yet been made, and authorities have not identified a motive or any suspects.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local Buddhist community, where Indrasingh Mahathera was regarded as a respected spiritual figure. Residents have appealed to law enforcement to ensure a swift and thorough investigation and to hold the perpetrator accountable.
The probe remains ongoing as officers continue gathering evidence and questioning individuals connected to the monastery.
