Sericulture and Beekeeping Training Held in East Siang to Boost Rural Livelihoods

Itanagar, April 27: The Department of Sericulture under the Directorate of Textile and Handicraft recently organised training programmes on beekeeping and sericulture at the Sericulture Farm in Sille, under Ruksin Sub-Division in East Siang district.

The programme saw participation from over 40 farmers, including registered beneficiaries and individuals from nearby villages such as Remi, Tekang, Ruksin, Sika Tode and Sika Bamin. The initiative focused on promoting bee rearing and silkworm cultivation as sustainable income-generating activities.

During the sessions, officials and subject experts provided practical training on scientific methods of beekeeping, plantation of host plants for silkworms, and various stages of silk production. The programme aimed to enhance technical knowledge and improve productivity in both sectors.

Talong Tadeng stated that the training was designed to equip farmers with the necessary expertise to ensure sustainability and better output. Addressing the participants, Dagmo Riba said that selected farmers would receive advanced training in specialised techniques related to silkworm and bee rearing.

He further noted that the government would provide support in the form of equipment and plantation resources to strengthen sericulture activities in the region.

Officials also encouraged participants to implement the knowledge gained, particularly in pre-cocoon and post-cocoon processes alongside beekeeping practices, to create viable livelihood opportunities and generate employment in rural areas.
