Seven Itanagar Municipal Wards Reserved for Women Ahead of December Elections

Itanagar: In a move aimed at strengthening women’s representation in local governance, seven of the twenty wards under the Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) have been reserved for women corporators ahead of the upcoming municipal elections scheduled for December 2025.

The reservation process was finalised through a draw of lots held on Tuesday at the DK Convention Hall in Itanagar under the supervision of the State Election Commission (SEC). The exercise formed part of the broader preparations for the rural and urban local body elections across Arunachal Pradesh.

According to the results, Wards 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 18, and 20 have been designated for women candidates, ensuring adherence to the one-third reservation policy mandated for women in local bodies. The remaining wards will remain open to candidates under the general category.

The event was attended by senior officials, local representatives, and Itanagar MLA Techi Kaso, who also witnessed the draw for the reservation of the Mayor’s post for the upcoming urban local body polls. Officials present reaffirmed that the process was conducted in a fair and transparent manner, underscoring the commission’s commitment to inclusive electoral practices.

The State Election Commission is expected to issue the official notification for the elections by October 30, after which the Model Code of Conduct will be enforced across the concerned municipal and panchayat areas.

The December elections are expected to serve as a key milestone in deepening grassroots democracy in Arunachal Pradesh, expanding women’s participation and leadership within both municipal and panchayati governance structures.
