Dibrugarh: Massive erosion has been reported along the River Brahmaputra near the Dibrugarh Town Protection (DTP) Dyke, sparking widespread concern among residents and civic bodies. The swelling river and its strong current have intensified the erosion, damaging sections of the dyke and posing a serious threat to nearby localities.
Residents living near the Old SP Office Ghat area — one of the worst-affected zones — described the situation as alarming. “The erosion has become a yearly nightmare. Every monsoon, we live in fear that the river will swallow more land,” said a local resident, echoing the community’s growing distress.

Locals have called for immediate and concrete action from the Water Resources Department and the district administration, warning that further delays could endanger the safety of Dibrugarh town and surrounding regions.
The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Dibrugarh unit, has also appealed to the Chief Minister of Assam for urgent intervention. The organization has demanded a permanent, scientific solution to strengthen the dyke, emphasizing that conventional methods like geo-bags and porcupines are inadequate to counter the scale of the ongoing erosion.
