Guwahati: In a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the death of beloved singer Zubeen Garg, two key figures, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahanta, are scheduled to be transferred to judicial custody today following the completion of their 14-day period under the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The duo appeared before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court this morning, though the final destination of their detention remains unconfirmed, with Baksa Jail and Guwahati Central Jail being potential facilities.
Goswami and Mahanta’s arrests are central to the high-profile case, which has so far seen seven individuals taken into custody. Five other accused are already lodged in Baksa Jail, including Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddhart Sharma, Zubeen Garg’s cousin Sandeepan Garg, and the singer’s two personal security officers, Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya. The proceedings follow routine medical check-ups for Goswami and Mahanta prior to their court appearance.
Security has been intensified around both the CID office and the CJM court premises, with the Assam Police stepping up measures to ensure peace and order. This heightened vigilance comes in response to previous unrest in Baksa, where angry fans of the late singer clashed with authorities during the transfer of the initial five accused to Baksa Jail. During that incident, protestors demanding justice for Zubeen Garg reportedly threw stones and sandals. The case continues to command considerable public attention, placing mounting pressure on authorities to deliver a transparent and swift investigation.
