Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival Pays Heartfelt Tribute to Zubeen Garg as Thousands Join in Emotional Rendition of ‘Mayabini’

Thousands gathered at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on November 15 for the second day of the Shillong Cherry Blossom Music & Arts Festival, coming together to honour the memory of iconic musician Zubeen Garg, whose recent death has deeply shaken the region’s music community.

In one of the festival’s most powerful moments, performers Zublee Baruah, Prabin Borah, Priyanka Bharali and Arupjyoti Baruah led a moving rendition of Garg’s cherished song Mayabini. The entire stadium joined in chorus, creating a stirring collective tribute that celebrated the late artist’s enduring legacy and influence on Assamese and regional music.

The homage followed a dynamic series of early evening performances by Shillong’s own Meba Ofilia, Japan’s Drum Tao and DJ Kennedy. International acts later took centre stage, with Danish group Aqua delivering nostalgic favourites such as Barbie Girl, and American rapper Tyga energising the crowd with hits including Swish and Dip. The night concluded with an electrifying set by three-time Grammy winner Diplo, who transformed the venue into a pulsating dance arena.

The two-day festival, which opened on November 14, began with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma reaffirming the state’s commitment to expanding the event into a holistic cultural platform. Day one featured performances by Bollywood star Nora Fatehi, Irish band The Script and American pop sensation Jason Derulo, whose rendition of Savage Love lit up the stadium with synchronised LED wristbands.

Beyond the main stage, Ward’s Lake hosted the Japan Arena, offering kimono experiences and traditional art displays. Cosplay showcases, art installations, food courts and local craft stalls added to the festival’s vibrant atmosphere, creating a diverse cultural blend for visitors.

With previous editions featuring global names such as Akon, Clean Bandit, Boney M, Ronan Keating and Ne-Yo, the Cherry Blossom Festival has strengthened Meghalaya’s position in India’s expanding concert circuit. The event also bolsters the Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project, providing valuable exposure to emerging local talent alongside internationally acclaimed performers.

By drawing thousands of visitors from across India and abroad each November, the festival has become a significant catalyst for tourism and employment, further enhancing Meghalaya’s reputation as a premier cultural destination in the Northeast.
