Shillong MP Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon Dies of Heart Attack at 54, Leaders Across Northeast Mourn Loss

Shillong, Feb 20: Shillong Lok Sabha MP Ricky AJ Syngkon passed away on Thursday evening, February 19, after suffering a heart attack. He was 54. His sudden demise has drawn an outpouring of grief from political leaders across Meghalaya and neighbouring Assam, who remembered him as a committed and compassionate public servant.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma led the tributes, expressing shock and profound sorrow over the untimely loss. In a post on X, Sangma described Syngkon as a dedicated leader with deep enthusiasm for public service and an unwavering commitment to his people. He said the parliamentarian was rooted in faith and served with humility, vision and a sincere desire to uplift society.

State minister Wailadmiki Shylla also conveyed his condolences, calling Syngkon’s passing an immense loss not only to his family and loved ones but also to the people he served with dedication and commitment. He highlighted the late MP’s focus on public welfare and the development of the state.

The Meghalaya Health Department paid tribute to Syngkon as well, describing him as “a gem” known for his humility, kind heart, warm smile and unwavering love for the people. The department expressed deep anguish at his passing.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also offered his respects through a post from his office on X, stating that he was deeply saddened by the death of the Voice of the People Party leader and praying for his soul’s eternal peace.

Syngkon’s death leaves a significant void in Meghalaya’s representation in the Lok Sabha. As one of the state’s two Members of Parliament, he had been a vocal advocate for regional concerns and played an active role in raising issues affecting the people of the Shillong parliamentary constituency.
