Shillong MP Ricky AJ Syngkon Dies at 54; Leaders Across Parties Pay Tribute

Shillong, Feb 20: Ricky AJ Syngkon, the Lok Sabha MP from Shillong in Meghalaya, died on the evening of February 19 after suffering a heart attack. He was 54. One of the state’s two representatives in the lower house of Parliament, his death has prompted an outpouring of grief from leaders across the political spectrum.

Rahul Gandhi led the tributes, expressing sorrow over Syngkon’s passing. In a post on X, he said, “Saddened by the passing of Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon, Lok Sabha MP from Shillong, Meghalaya. His commitment to public service and the people of Meghalaya will be remembered with respect. My condolences to his family, friends, and supporters.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed his condolences, noting Syngkon’s dedicated service to the people of Meghalaya. “Saddened by the passing of Lok Sabha MP from Shillong, Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon. He will be remembered for his dedicated service to the people of Meghalaya. My thoughts are with his family, friends and supporters during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace,” Modi said in his message.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed deep sorrow, describing Syngkon as a compassionate leader committed to public service and the welfare of his constituents.

As news of his death spread, condolences continued to pour in on social media, with colleagues and well-wishers mourning the void left by the parliamentarian in Meghalaya’s political landscape.
