Shillong Night Drive Nets 194 Traffic Violations, Rs 2.46 Lakh Collected in Fines

Shillong, April 27: A late-night enforcement operation across Shillong resulted in the detection of 194 traffic violations, with penalties amounting to Rs 2.46 lakh, according to East Khasi Hills Police.

The coordinated naka drive was conducted on the intervening night of April 25 and 26 across key areas including Sadar, Laitumkhrah and Lumdiengjri. Senior officials, among them the Superintendent of Police, SP (City/Traffic) and Additional SP Traffic, supervised the operation.

Police stated that the initiative was aimed at intensifying checks during night hours, when instances of unsafe driving and violations tend to rise. Multiple checkpoints were established simultaneously to ensure broader coverage and effective monitoring.

The enforcement targeted offences such as drunk driving, unauthorised modifications to exhaust systems and vehicle lights, use of black-tinted glass, and failure to produce valid documents under the Motor Vehicles Act.

More than 100 personnel, including traffic officials and local police units, were deployed for the operation. Each checkpoint was overseen by gazetted officers to ensure uniform enforcement and coordination.

Officials said the drive forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen compliance with traffic regulations and improve overall road safety in the district.
