Show Cause Notice Issued to Guwahati School Headmaster

Guwahati: The District Election Officer (DEO) of Kamrup Metro has issued a show cause notice to the headmaster of Rupnagar Vidyapeeth M.E. School in Guwahati for allegedly permitting a political meeting on the school premises in violation of the Model Code of Conduct and Election Commission of India norms. According to the notice, the meeting was reportedly held on March 30 inside the school campus, allegedly linked to a candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party from the Guwahati Central Legislative Assembly constituency.

The DEO stated that allowing political activities within educational institutions constitutes a serious breach of the MCC. It cited Rule 7(c) under “Other Campaign Related Items,” which strictly prohibits the use of school premises—government, aided, or private—for election campaigning. The notice further emphasized that organizing or permitting such an event, whether through direct involvement or negligence, amounts to gross misconduct and may invite action under electoral laws and ECI guidelines.

The headmaster has been directed to submit a detailed reply within 24 hours, clarifying the circumstances, those involved, and other relevant facts. Failure to respond within the stipulated time may lead to ex parte action. The incident comes amid heightened vigilance over election norms ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls in Assam.
