Shyamkanu Mahanta Sought Legal Aid in Zubeen Garg’s Death Case

Guwahati: Shyamkanu Mahanta, one of the accused in the Zubeen Garg death case, has made a formal request to the court for legal assistance.

Mahanta informed the court of his difficulty in securing legal representation, stating, “I was looking for a lawyer in Delhi, but I cannot get a lawyer from Delhi. Please provide me a lawyer.”

This plea for court-provided counsel comes amid a directive from the All Assam Lawyers Association. The Association has resolved that none of its members will personally represent Shyamkanu Mahanta or any other individuals arrested by the Assam Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) in connection with the ongoing Zubeen Garg death probe.

Despite this collective stance, the Lawyers Association has clarified that it will not object if the court refers the matter to the Legal Aid Defence Counsel (LADC) and a lawyer subsequently agrees to provide representation under that scheme. The decision rests now with the court regarding the provision of legal aid to the accused.
