Itanagar, August 15: Sub-Inspector Tamo Bakhang has been awarded the prestigious Gold Medal by the Arunachal Pradesh Government in recognition of his courage, dedication and service on the occasion of the 80th Independence Day.
Bakhang is one of only two Gold Medal recipients announced by the state government this year and the sole individual recipient. The other Gold Medal was awarded to an organisation.
The honour comes after a series of incidents in which Bakhang demonstrated courage and commitment while performing his duties. In 2025, he was recognised for his bravery during the Hollongi gunfight, where he reportedly confronted alleged drug kingpin Rohit Basumatory.
Earlier this year, Bakhang sustained a serious eye injury during bandh-related unrest near 6 Kilo in Itanagar. According to reports, his vehicle was allegedly attacked with stones while he was travelling towards the protest site, with shattered glass causing severe injuries to his eyes.
He was initially treated at Niba Hospital before being referred to TRIHMS and subsequently sent to Delhi for advanced treatment.
Despite the challenges and risks associated with his duties, Bakhang continued to serve in policing and public service, earning one of the state government’s highest honours.
The recognition is particularly notable as he received the State Gold Medal after around four years of service, marking a significant achievement early in his policing career.
From confronting armed criminals to sustaining a serious injury while maintaining public order, Bakhang’s journey reflects his courage, sacrifice and commitment to duty.
