Sikkim BJP Slams Pawan Chamling Over Remarks Comparing State With Manipur

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Sikkim unit, has strongly criticised former Chief Minister Pawan Chamling over his recent remarks comparing Sikkim with Manipur, terming the statement irresponsible, misleading and unbecoming of a leader who has served the state for over two decades.

In a statement, the party asserted that Sikkim continues to remain a peaceful, progressive and politically mature state, and described the comparison with Manipur as unfortunate and insensitive.

The BJP said invoking the challenges faced by people of Manipur for political messaging does not contribute to constructive public discourse and instead encourages fear and speculation. It questioned the basis of Chamling’s remarks and urged him to present facts if such serious claims were being made, stressing that public accountability demands evidence in matters of this nature.

The party further stated that political leaders must engage in discussions rooted in facts, accountability and vision rather than rhetoric that could create confusion among citizens. It added that people of Sikkim deserve political debate focused on policy issues and developmental priorities.

Highlighting its stance on regional identity, the BJP said it has consistently respected Sikkim’s traditions, culture and constitutional safeguards under Article 371F.

The statement also referred to the Central government’s support for Sikkim through initiatives in infrastructure development, disaster relief, connectivity, tourism, healthcare and welfare programmes under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Citing the broader vision of Viksit Bharat, the party said special emphasis has been placed on the development of the North Eastern region, including Sikkim, through enhanced connectivity, infrastructure expansion and economic opportunities.

The BJP further maintained that portraying the party as a force of division was misleading, asserting that its focus remains on inclusive development and national progress.

Concluding its statement, the party appealed to Chamling to engage in constructive debate on Sikkim’s future and said public discourse should be guided by facts and vision rather than rhetoric and fear.
