The Sikkim government has strongly condemned the alleged racial abuse of three young women from Arunachal Pradesh in Malviya Nagar, New Delhi, describing the incident as “deeply unfortunate and profoundly disturbing.” The reaction came after a video purportedly capturing the episode circulated widely on social media.
According to a statement issued by the Sikkim Chief Minister’s Press Secretary, the incident took place on February 20 during the installation of an air-conditioner at the women’s rented accommodation. What reportedly began as a minor disagreement escalated into verbal abuse, with the women allegedly targeted over their Northeastern identity. Offensive remarks are said to have questioned their character and dignity, once again bringing attention to instances of racial prejudice faced by people from the region.
The statement further noted that derogatory comments were also made about ministers and Chief Ministers of Northeastern states, including Sikkim. “Such behaviour is completely unacceptable and runs counter to the constitutional values of equality, dignity, and unity that define our nation,” the release stated.
Calling for accountability, the Sikkim government urged the Delhi authorities to carry out a swift, impartial and transparent investigation into the matter. It pressed for strict legal action against those found responsible. “Justice must be delivered without delay,” the statement said, adding that a strong message must be sent that racial discrimination and gender-based abuse will not be tolerated anywhere in the country.
The government also appealed to citizens across India to reject all forms of prejudice, underscoring that the safety and dignity of students and working professionals from the Northeast must be safeguarded at all times.
