Sikkim Government Raises Concern Over Frequent NH-10 Closures Affecting Tourism and Local Mobility

Gangtok: The Sikkim government has expressed serious concern over repeated closures of National Highway-10 (NH-10), warning that the disruptions are adversely affecting tourism and local travel, particularly during the peak tourist season.

In a letter to Samrat Sanyal, General Manager of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL), C.S. Rao, Additional Chief Secretary of Sikkim’s Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, highlighted the inconvenience caused by frequent and prolonged road blockages.

Rao noted that many closures occur without prior notice and sometimes for minor repair works, causing significant hardship to both residents and tourists. “It is with concern that we note an increase in both the frequency and duration of road blockages/closures along NH-10 over the past year,” he wrote.

The state government stressed that NH-10 is Sikkim’s vital lifeline, serving as the primary economic and logistical artery, with tourism heavily reliant on uninterrupted traffic flow.

Officials urged NHIDCL to minimise unnecessary closures, improve coordination and communication, and ensure timely completion of maintenance work to prevent further disruptions.
