Sikkim MP D. T. Lepcha Reviews Development Projects in Gnathang-Machong, Plans Hanuman Statue and Highway Boost

Gangtok, May 5: Sikkim MP D. T. Lepcha, accompanied by Pamin Lepcha, carried out an extensive inspection of ongoing and proposed development projects across the Gnathang-Machong constituency, including Barapathing and Latok, on May 4.

During the visit, the leaders reviewed key infrastructure works, engaged with local residents, and discussed plans aimed at improving connectivity and promoting tourism in the region. The inspection focused on assessing progress and identifying opportunities to strengthen development initiatives in these remote areas.

A major highlight of the visit was the finalisation of land for a proposed large Hanuman statue at Barapathing. The project, estimated at ₹2 crore, is set to receive financial support from Gujarat-based Rajya Sabha MP Govind Dholakia. Officials confirmed that land measurements and site inspections were completed during the visit, clearing the way for implementation.

The delegation also reviewed plans for a proposed alternative highway linking Rolep through Barapathing and Latok to Jawaharlal Nehru Road at the 17th Mile, with further extension towards Nathula Pass. The project, targeted for completion by early 2027, is expected to significantly enhance regional connectivity and boost tourism prospects.

Authorities indicated that tourist destinations may be developed along the route to create employment opportunities and stimulate local economic growth. During interactions with residents, the leaders also addressed public concerns and assured continued support for infrastructure upgrades, including the renovation and development of temples and other community facilities.
