Sikkim MP Indra Hang Subba Urges Centre to Set Up Separate Bar Council for State

Gangtok, March 30: Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba has submitted a memorandum to Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, seeking the establishment of an independent bar council for the state to address long-standing concerns of the legal community.

In his representation, Subba noted that Sikkim’s legal fraternity is currently governed by the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim, an arrangement he said presents logistical and administrative challenges for local advocates. He highlighted issues related to accessibility, representation, and the ability to effectively respond to the specific needs of lawyers practising within the state.

The MP emphasised that creating a separate bar council would enhance institutional efficiency and strengthen the legal ecosystem in Sikkim. He stated that an independent body could improve governance within the profession, ensure better service delivery, and contribute to improved access to justice for residents.

Subba also urged the ministry to initiate the necessary process under the Advocates Act, 1961 to facilitate the formation of a dedicated bar council for Sikkim at the earliest.
