Gangtok, Feb 22: Sikkim has witnessed a marked shortfall in rainfall during the first two months of 2026, with every district registering significant deficits, according to data released by the Meteorological Centre in Gangtok under the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Figures compiled for the period from January 1 to February 21 show that rainfall levels across the State have fallen into the deficient to no-rain categories, indicating an extended dry spell during what is typically part of the winter precipitation phase.
Meteorological officials have not indicated any immediate forecast of substantial rainfall that could help bridge the gap. The absence of a near-term wet spell has raised concerns over the continuing deficit and its potential impact.
Experts have cautioned that prolonged dry winter conditions may affect agricultural activities, strain water resources and heighten the risk of forest fires if the pattern persists. With Sikkim moving closer to the pre-monsoon season, authorities are maintaining close surveillance of weather trends and rainfall patterns to assess possible implications in the coming weeks.
