Gangtok: In a landmark moment for Sikkim’s sporting history, the Indian women’s football team is set to take on Nepal in an exhibition match at Gangtok’s iconic Paljor Stadium on Wednesday. The All-India Football Federation (AIFF) confirmed the fixture, calling it a significant milestone for women’s football in the state.
This marks the Blue Tigresses’ first-ever international appearance in Sikkim, a state renowned for its deep-rooted football culture and passionate fan base. Anticipation has been building across Gangtok and neighbouring regions as supporters prepare to witness their national team in action on home turf for the first time.
The upcoming encounter follows the recent Tri-Nation International Friendlies in Shillong, where Nepal narrowly defeated India 2–1. Wednesday’s match offers the Indian team a chance for redemption while providing fans with a rare spectacle of top-tier women’s football.
The event is being jointly organised by the Sikkim Football Association (SFA) and the Government of Sikkim, with Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) attending as the Chief Guest. The Chief Minister had earlier hosted both teams for dinner, reaffirming the state’s commitment to supporting women’s sports and promoting football development.
To encourage maximum participation, the SFA has announced free public entry, inviting fans from Sikkim, Kalimpong, Darjeeling, and North Bengal to fill the stands. Officials expect nearly 25,000 spectators, likely making it one of the largest-ever crowds for a women’s football match in the Northeast.
Beyond the competitive spirit, the match carries symbolic importance. India’s appearance follows its recent qualification for the 2026 AFC Asian Cup — ending a 22-year wait and highlighting the growing strength of women’s football in the country.
More than just a friendly, the India–Nepal exhibition match celebrates sporting camaraderie while cementing Sikkim’s status as a rising football hub in the Northeast.
