Silchar–Sairang Passenger Train to Be Launched, Bringing First Direct Rail Link Between Barak Valley and Mizoram Capital

Aizawl, Feb 9: Rail connectivity in the North-East is set to receive a major boost with the launch of a new passenger train service between Silchar in Assam and Sairang in Mizoram on February 9, 2026. The service will provide the Barak Valley with its first-ever direct railway connection to Aizawl, marking a long-awaited milestone in regional transport infrastructure.

The introduction of the train follows sustained efforts by Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha, who had consistently pressed the Union Ministry of Railways to expedite critical connectivity projects for the region. Acting on these representations, the North East Frontier Railway confirmed the commencement of the Silchar–Sairang passenger service, terming it a significant step towards improving mobility and integration in the North-East.

As per an official communication issued by Samir Lohani, Divisional Railway Manager of the Lumding Division, the flag-off ceremony will take place at Sairang Railway Station at noon on February 9. The event is expected to draw attention to the broader push for modernisation and expansion of railway infrastructure in the region.

The programme will also feature the inauguration of new blended hospitality facilities at Guwahati Railway Station, including sleeping pods, a contemporary air-conditioned lounge and a multi-cuisine restaurant designed to enhance passenger experience.

Union Minister for Railways, Information and Broadcasting, and Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has confirmed his participation in the event through video conferencing, reflecting the importance accorded to the project at the national level.

The Silchar–Sairang rail service is expected to improve inter-state connectivity, promote trade and tourism, and strengthen social and economic ties between Assam and Mizoram. For the Barak Valley, often described as a strategic yet underserved corridor in the North-East, the new train is being seen as a transformative step towards greater inclusion and development.
