Six Firearms, Explosives and Drone Seized in Intelligence-Based Operation in Manipur’s Kakching

Imphal, Jan 1: Security forces recovered a significant cache of weapons, explosives and ammunition during an intelligence-driven operation in Manipur’s Kakching district on December 31, underscoring continued efforts to dismantle illegal arms networks in the state.

Officials said the recovery was made from the Wabagai Natekhong Turenmei area, where security personnel launched a targeted search based on specific inputs. The operation led to the seizure of six firearms, including an M-16 rifle, a self-loading rifle (SLR), a 7.65 mm pistol, one single-barrel gun and two single-barrel bolt-action rifles.

Alongside the firearms, forces uncovered a large quantity of explosives and related materials. The haul included 10 grenades, an improvised explosive device weighing approximately three kilograms, a 51 mm mortar bomb, an explosive shell, four detonators, two arm rings, six tear smoke shells and 71 live rounds of ammunition of different calibres. A quadcopter drone with its accessories was also found at the site, raising concerns about the possible use of technology in illicit activities.

Authorities said no arrests were immediately reported, but investigations are underway to identify those responsible for storing the arms and explosives. Security agencies have intensified search operations in fringe and vulnerable pockets across several districts, aiming to curb illegal stockpiling of weapons and strengthen public safety amid the prevailing security situation in Manipur.
