Tinsukia: The Moran community has reignited its longstanding demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) recognition by launching an indefinite economic blockade from 5 a.m. today. The stir, spearheaded by the All Moran Students’ Union (AMSU) and backed by six national-level organizations of the community, has brought the movement of vital resources such as oil, coal, tea, and timber in Tinsukia district to a grinding halt.
This fresh agitation follows a series of massive demonstrations organized earlier at four strategic locations, where the Morans had showcased their collective strength, drawing attention from across the state and the nation.

The Morans, recognized as one of Assam’s oldest indigenous communities, have been pressing for constitutional recognition under the ST category for decades. They argue that such recognition is essential for safeguarding their political, social, and economic rights.
In a stern warning to the ruling dispensation, the agitators have declared that if their demand is not met before the 2026 Assembly elections, they will take a decisive political stand against the BJP.

With the blockade paralyzing the transportation of key commodities, concerns are rising over its economic impact on Assam’s industrial sector. Meanwhile, the district administration has urged protest leaders to engage in dialogue, but AMSU has maintained that the agitation will continue until concrete assurances are given.
