Agartala, May 1: At least two people, including a five-year-old child, lost their lives and four others were injured in storm-related incidents across Tripura over the past 48 hours, officials confirmed on May 1, as severe weather conditions caused extensive damage to property and infrastructure.
According to State Project Director (Disaster Management) Sanat Kumar Das, the child died after a mud-walled house collapsed in Radhanagar area of Unakoti district on Thursday, while his brother sustained injuries in the incident. In a separate case, a man from Longtarai Valley in Dhalai district was killed after being struck by lightning on Wednesday. Three other individuals were injured in separate incidents linked to the storms.
The intense weather, marked by heavy rainfall and strong winds, resulted in large-scale destruction across multiple districts. Officials reported that 3,997 houses were damaged, including 180 huts that were completely destroyed. The state government has released Rs 79.59 lakh as interim relief to affected families.
To support displaced residents, authorities set up four relief camps, sheltering around 243 families during the peak of the crisis. Officials stated that those accommodated have since returned to their homes as conditions improved.
The storms also disrupted electricity supply in several areas, with 129 electric poles reported to have collapsed. Restoration efforts are currently underway, particularly in remote and difficult-to-access regions.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations in Sepahijala and South Tripura districts, prompting authorities to remain on alert and continue monitoring the evolving weather situation.
