Sushmita Dev Seeks Swift Action Over Alleged Gang Rape in Silchar

Guwahati, Feb 24: Sushmita Dev wrote to the Senior Superintendent of Police of Cachar, seeking immediate and stringent action over a recent alleged gang rape reported from Silchar.

In her letter to Cachar SSP Partha Pratim Das, IPS, she expressed serious concern over reports that the incident occurred on the Silchar Bye-pass Road on the night of February 19. She stated that the case had once again raised questions about the safety and security of residents in Silchar town.

Referring to media reports, Dev noted that the alleged crime took place when the police administration was engaged in preparations for the visit of the Union Home Minister and the Chief Minister of Assam to the Barak Valley. She sought details of the steps taken in the investigation and termed the matter highly sensitive.

The MP also flagged concerns over frequent incidents along the Silchar Bye-pass and adjoining areas, alleging that the stretch had become increasingly unsafe, particularly during night hours. She urged the SSP to personally intervene, ensure swift identification and arrest of the accused, and initiate stringent legal action in accordance with the law.

Dev further called for enhanced night patrolling and recommended installation of adequate street lighting and CCTV cameras to strengthen surveillance. She stated that as the area now falls under the Silchar Municipal Corporation, municipal funds should be utilised to improve public safety infrastructure.

Police officials had not issued a detailed statement on the progress of the investigation at the time of filing the report.
