Dispur Police detained four people suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals in Guwahati for questioning, as authorities continued verification and enforcement operations against suspected foreign nationals staying in the city without valid documents.
The four individuals were detected in the Dispur area and taken into custody, police said. Their identities, nationality and circumstances of entry into Guwahati were being verified.
The detention followed a series of recent police operations in the city targeting suspected Bangladeshi nationals.
In one operation, police apprehended five suspected Bangladeshi nationals at Paltan Bazar railway station while they were travelling on the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express. The subsequent investigation led police to Vintage Home hotel, where the five were allegedly staying.
Police arrested the hotel owner, two managers and a suspected key facilitator in connection with allegations of providing shelter to foreign nationals.
In another operation, 13 suspected Bangladeshi nationals were detained from Shanti Hotel. Police initiated proceedings for their expulsion under applicable provisions of the Immigrants Act.
The latest detention in Dispur forms part of the ongoing verification and enforcement drive by Guwahati Police. Further details on the four detainees and the outcome of their questioning were awaited.
