Suspected drug trafficker injured in police encounter in Barpeta

A suspected drug trafficker was injured in a police encounter at Mailkuchi village in Assam’s Barpeta district in the early hours of Sunday, 16 November.

Police said Barpeta Police opened fire on Anowar Hussain of Mailkuchi after he attempted to escape from custody. The incident occurred at around 2 am.

Earlier, on 6 November, Tarabari Police had seized 11 soap cases filled with suspected heroin from an Alto vehicle, after which the drug supply team abandoned the car and fled. Based on allegations of his involvement in the same network, Tarabari Police detained Hussain on Saturday night and took him to locate additional narcotics.

During the operation, he allegedly pushed the police personnel and tried to flee, prompting police to fire at him, injuring him in the left thigh. He was admitted to Barpeta Medical College and Hospital.

Barpeta Superintendent of Police Sushanta Biswas Sharma, Additional SP (Crime) Bidyut Bikash Bora Bhuyan and Sadar DSP Jitesh Barman visited the site and initiated an investigation into the incident.
