Tamarhat: In a dramatic late-night development, Tamarhat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kapil Bora was sent to Dhubri District Jail on Tuesday night in connection with the alleged custodial death of a local resident, sparking widespread outrage and demands for justice.
Bora was produced before a Judicial Magistrate late in the evening and entered the jail premises around 11:40 pm. The unusual timing of the proceedings has drawn sharp criticism from residents and legal experts, who questioned the secrecy and haste surrounding the process.

The case relates to the death of 35-year-old Monohar Roy, a resident of Mespara village, who died early Wednesday reportedly from injuries sustained during police custody. According to his family, Roy, along with Rakesh Roy and Ganesh Roy, was detained on September 28 following a dispute over unpaid wages involving a local contractor, Habibul Sheikh. Villagers allege that the three were brutally beaten while in custody and later released in critical condition. Roy’s condition worsened soon after, leading to his death.
The incident has ignited anger across Tamarhat in Assam’s Dhubri district. Hundreds of residents took to the streets, blocking roads and demanding immediate punishment for those responsible. Local organisations accused the police of attempting to shield the accused and manage the fallout quietly.
Following the uproar, the deceased’s family filed an FIR naming OC Kapil Bora and contractor Habibul Sheikh as the main accused. Police sources earlier stated that Bora had been placed under “reserved closed” status pending an internal inquiry. However, his sudden nighttime court appearance and transfer to jail have only deepened public suspicion.

Civil society groups and student organisations have condemned the incident, calling it a blatant case of custodial torture and a serious violation of human rights. They have demanded a judicial inquiry to ensure an impartial and transparent investigation. As tensions continue to simmer, authorities face mounting pressure to act decisively and restore public trust in the justice system.
