Tamranga-Konora Beels Emerge as Scenic Eco-Tourism Attraction in Lower Assam

Bongaigaon, May 30: The twin wetlands of Tamranga and Konora Beels in Jogighopa, located between Ghilaguri and Bishnupur in Assam’s Bongaigaon district, are emerging as popular destinations for nature enthusiasts, birdwatchers and tourists seeking a tranquil retreat amid the state’s natural landscapes.

Situated close to one another and connected to the Brahmaputra River, the two wetlands form a vibrant ecosystem supporting diverse aquatic species, wildlife and a variety of resident and migratory birds throughout the year.

Tamranga Beel, named after the copper-like hue of its waters, attracts particular attention during the winter months when migratory birds arrive in large numbers, making the area a favoured destination for birdwatching and nature photography.

A notable feature of the location is the scenic road running between the two beels, flanked by rows of trees planted decades ago by the late Harakumar Roy, a retired headmaster of Ghilaguri Katashbari Higher Secondary School. The mature tree-lined corridor adds to the area’s visual appeal and enhances the visitor experience.

The growing popularity of the wetlands has led to an increase in tourist footfall, with visitors from across Lower Assam regularly travelling to the site to enjoy its natural beauty, peaceful surroundings and biodiversity-rich environment.

The destination recently gained wider attention after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared a video of the Tamranga-Konora Beels on social media, highlighting their scenic charm and tourism potential.

As Assam continues to promote sustainable and nature-based tourism, the Tamranga and Konora Beels are increasingly being recognised as important eco-tourism assets and biodiversity hotspots in Lower Assam.
