Tawang Residents Stage Mass Protest Alleging Irregularities in PWD Tender Process

Itanagar, March 18: Thousands of residents from the 2-Tawang Assembly Constituency in Arunachal Pradesh staged a peaceful protest on March 17, raising allegations of corruption, procedural violations, and lack of transparency in the tendering process under the Public Works Department (PWD) Tawang Division.

The demonstrators gathered near the Buddha Statue in Tawang and marched in an orderly procession towards the offices of the Executive Engineer and the Deputy Commissioner. Participants expressed strong dissatisfaction with what they described as opaque functioning and arbitrary decision-making within the department.

According to the protestors, the agitation was triggered by the issuance of high-value tenders under schemes such as SIDF and RE without following established norms. They alleged that several works worth crores were floated without ensuring transparency, leading to concerns over possible irregularities and misuse of public funds.

A major concern highlighted during the protest was the alleged absence of communication with the local MLA. Protestors claimed that the legislator had not been informed about key development works and proposals, which they said undermines accountability and proper representation of public interests.

The demonstrators stressed that development initiatives must involve consultation with elected representatives to ensure transparency and safeguard the interests of the constituency. They demanded the immediate transfer of Executive Engineer Er. Tadar Nyakpu and Assistant Engineer Er. Jumpe Ete, along with a departmental inquiry into the alleged irregularities.

They also called for the cancellation of recent Notices Inviting Tender issued on February 11 and March 5 and 13, 2026, and sought the implementation of transparent procedures for all projects exceeding ₹50 lakh.

A memorandum detailing these demands was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner. The protestors issued a one-week ultimatum to the authorities to take action, warning that failure to respond would result in an indefinite democratic movement.

The protest concluded peacefully, with organisers reiterating their commitment to non-violent means while pressing for greater accountability and transparency in governance.
