Guwahati, Dec 27: Tension prevailed in the Gadain Raji area under Mahur Police Station in Assam’s Dima Hasao district following a fatal hit-and-run accident on December 26.
According to official sources, the victim has been identified as Seiminhao Lhangum, a resident of Numjang village under Mahur Police Station limits. He was allegedly struck by an unidentified vehicle, which fled the scene immediately after the incident, leaving him critically injured. Lhangum succumbed to his injuries on the spot.
The incident sparked widespread anger among local residents. Soon after, an agitated crowd gathered at the accident site and blocked National Highway-27 (NH-27), bringing vehicular movement to a standstill for several hours.
Protesters reportedly set tyres ablaze on the highway, resulting in long traffic snarls and leaving several vehicles stranded on both sides of the road.
Police and district administration officials rushed to the spot and held discussions with the protesters to defuse the situation and restore normalcy. Additional security forces were deployed as a precautionary measure to prevent further escalation.
Authorities said efforts are underway to identify and trace the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run. Police have assured that strict action will be taken against those responsible and have appealed to the public to maintain calm as the investigation continues.
