Terracotta Art of Asharikandi to Shine at Delhi’s R-Day Parade

Dhubri: The iconic terracotta art of Asharikandi village in Gauripur, Dhubri district of Assam, is set to gain national and international recognition at the 77th Republic Day Parade in New Delhi. At the central parade to be held on Kartavya Path on Republic Day 2026, Assam’s tableau will prominently feature the historic Asharikandi terracotta craft as its central theme. Renowned for its distinctive craftsmanship, the terracotta art from Asharikandi will be showcased in various forms, including peacock-feather-inspired designs, terracotta animal figures such as elephants, and a wide range of beautifully crafted traditional artifacts. Elements of Majuli’s famous mask-making tradition will also be artistically represented.

The theme for this year’s Republic Day celebrations is “Atmanirbhar Bharat” and “Vande Mataram.” In line with this theme, the Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Assam, had proposed designs highlighting Asharikandi’s traditional terracotta art along with Majuli’s ancient mask art to the Ministry of Defence. After evaluation, experts from the Ministry selected Asharikandi’s terracotta heritage as Assam’s official tableau representation.

Asharikandi village has long held a unique place in Assam’s cultural landscape due to its centuries-old terracotta tradition.
