Tezpur University reschedules exams amid unprecedented campus crisis

Tezpur University announced the rescheduling of its end-term examinations after weeks of intense student protests over alleged corruption and administrative misconduct. This is the first time since the university was established that examinations have been disrupted due to a student-led agitation targeting the top administration.

The protests, which began in September over accusations of financial irregularities and arbitrary decisions by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh, escalated into a complete campus shutdown. With the Vice-Chancellor reportedly absconding and no functional leadership in place, academic and administrative activities came to a standstill.

The university stated that examinations could not be conducted under the prevailing circumstances and would be rearranged to ensure students were not academically disadvantaged. Fresh dates would be issued only after normalcy returned and following instructions from the Union Ministry of Education.

Students, supported by faculty and non-teaching staff, said the disruption demonstrated the severity of the crisis and the need for institutional reform. They maintained that temporary inconvenience was necessary to safeguard the university’s integrity and ensure accountability.

The decision to alter the examination schedule marks a significant moment for Tezpur University, highlighting the scale and impact of the ongoing movement. The campus community said the agitation would continue until decisive action was taken by the Ministry of Education.
