All Assam Gorkha Scheduled Caste Demand Committee intensifies protests demanding SC status in Assam

Guwahati, November 25: The All Assam Gorkha Scheduled Caste Demand Committee (AAGSCDC) today held a protest at Chachal playground here in six-mile demanding SC status.

The demand committee comprising of three Gorkha sub-caste communities namely- the Kami’s, Damai’s & Sarki’s have long been demanding the Scheduled Caste (SC) status in Assam.

Speaking to The Assam Rising, Chanbir Sonar, President, AAGSCDC said, “We have only one demand. The Kami, Damai & Sarki community residing in Assam have long been deprived of our constitutional right of being granted the SC status. If the West Bengal & Sikkim Government can grant the SC status then why can’t the Assam Government who too follows the same constitution grant us the SC status”.

“We would like to appeal to the Government of Assam to kindly look into this matter seriously and grant us our constiutional right to Scheduled Caste status in Assam also, along the lines of West Bengal & Sikkim”, added Chanbir Sonar.

Krishna Sundas, General Secretary, AAGSCDC while speaking to The Assam Rising said, “We request the Assam Government to make due considerations to include the Kami, Damai & Sarki (sub-caste) Gorkha community as Scheduled Caste, so that they may get scope for coming up to the level of their compatriot in course of time and be able to share the same sorrow and happenning of the land under the same roof on equal footing with the rest of the citizens of the country”.

“We remain hopeful that the Assam Government will take this matter seriously and grant us our constitutional right to SC status very soon”, added Sundas.
