SHILLONG, Aug. 6: Thousands of supporters of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) marched to the Meghalaya Main Secretariat in Shillong on Wednesday to protest against the state government and press the party’s key demands.
Led by VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, the rally witnessed supporters raising slogans against Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), and Deputy Chief Ministers Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar.
Anticipating a large turnout, authorities deployed heavy security around the Main Secretariat and erected barricades at key locations to regulate the movement of protesters and maintain law and order. Police closely monitored the demonstration, which remained peaceful, with no untoward incidents reported.
The protest came amid mounting political opposition to the state government, with the VPP mobilising supporters to highlight what it described as growing public dissatisfaction over governance issues.
Earlier, Basaiawmoit said the march was intended to reflect the frustration and anger of the people over 10 key issues that the party had raised at public meetings across the state.
He urged the government to take the demonstration seriously, warning that the VPP could intensify its agitation if public concerns continued to be ignored.
