Three Bear Cubs Rescued in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong After Being Found Alone in Forest

Karbi Anglong, March 12: In a significant wildlife rescue operation, three bear cubs were rescued from the Lamaran area of West Karbi Anglong district after they were found alone in the wild.

According to officials, a local farmer discovered the orphaned cubs while heading towards his jhum cultivation field. Realising that the young animals were vulnerable without their mother, he rescued them and later handed them over to the Assam Forest Department.

The cubs are currently being looked after by officials of the Kheroni forest range, also known as the Southern Forest Range. Forest personnel are providing them with medical care and proper food to ensure their wellbeing.

A forest department official said teams are keeping a close watch on the surrounding forest areas to trace the movements of the mother bear, who may have been separated from the cubs. Authorities plan to release the cubs back into the forest once the situation is assessed and conditions are considered safe.

Officials said the rescue reflects growing awareness among local communities in wildlife-rich regions of Assam about the importance of protecting animals and preventing human–wildlife conflict. Residents have also been urged to inform forest authorities immediately if they encounter distressed or orphaned wild animals so that timely conservation measures can be taken.
