Aizawl, Feb 23: Police in Mizoram confirmed that three young boys drowned in a pond in Serchhip district on February 21 while swimming.
The victims, all residents of Thenzawl town, were identified as nine-year-old H. Lalhruaitluanga, nine-year-old Lalmuansanga, and seven-year-old C Lalbiakhluna.
According to local residents, the children had been playing together since Saturday morning. Concern grew when they failed to return home by evening, prompting their families and locals to launch a search operation. A friend reportedly informed the families that the boys had planned to swim at Society Dil pond, directing rescuers to the location.
Volunteers found the children’s sandals on the bank of the pond and immediately began a water search. Divers later recovered the bodies the same evening.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma, who is also the local MLA, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. In a statement shared online, he said he was “deeply pained to learn of the tragic accident at Society Dil (pond), which claimed the precious lives of three young children from Thenzawl Vengthar.” He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for strength for them during this time of grief.
Police said an investigation is underway and urged parents and guardians to exercise caution and closely monitor children near water bodies to prevent such incidents.
