Three Electrocuted to Death in High-Voltage Surge in Assam’s Chirang

Guwahati, Jan 25: Three people were electrocuted to death and another sustained injuries after a sudden high-voltage electric surge swept through Amteka No. 1 Elengmari village in Assam’s Chirang district on Saturday night.

The incident occurred at around 10.30 pm when high-voltage electricity reportedly passed through household power lines, turning domestic connections lethal. Three residents died on the spot, while one person was injured and taken for medical treatment.

The deceased were identified as Daimalu Narzary, Bijoy Mushahary and Michael Basumatary. In a tragic coincidence, Basumatary had solemnised his marriage earlier in the day, with the celebrations turning into mourning within hours.

Preliminary information suggested that a high-voltage line came into contact with a single-phase low-tension wire mounted on an ST pole, allowing the current to flow into residential areas. The surge reportedly affected multiple houses in the village, including the wedding venue.

Residents said panic gripped the area as people rushed to disconnect power supplies to avoid further casualties. Power authorities were alerted immediately, and electricity supply to the affected area was cut as a precaution. Further investigation into the incident is underway.
