Three Members of Banned G-5 Group Arrested in Manipur for Threatening Sangai Festival Participants

Manipur Police have arrested three individuals linked to the banned G-5 conglomerate from Imphal West and Imphal East districts for allegedly issuing threats to participants of the recently concluded Sangai Festival. According to a senior police officer, five FIRs have already been registered in connection with the intimidation issued by the proscribed outfits.

The G-5, an umbrella group comprising the outlawed UNLF, KCP, KYKL, PREPAK and PREPAK (Pro), had reportedly imposed a one-year ban on four drama troupes for performing at the event. The group also demanded that all stall owners and participants publicly apologise before December 10.

Police said investigations are underway to identify additional individuals involved in circulating the threats. Authorities added that stringent legal measures will be taken to prevent any attempt at intimidation or disruption of public events.

Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla had earlier described the Sangai Festival as a crucial platform that fosters engagement between tourism stakeholders from India and abroad. However, this year’s edition, held after a three-year break due to ethnic turmoil, witnessed low public turnout amid ongoing protests by internally displaced persons.

Manipur has remained tense since ethnic clashes broke out in May 2023 between Meiteis from the valley and Kuki communities from the hill districts. The violence has claimed more than 260 lives and displaced thousands, casting a shadow over major public events in the state.
